2018 Autumn/Winter Mood Lifters- Plush Throws, Cushions & Opulent Interiors

I hope 2018 started well and positive for all. It is natural to feel like hibernating in the first two months with winter at its peak and its right after the December blowouts.

There are quit a few activities one can take on to either turn around or improve your mood during this period. In my case I took up some light exercises and detox to increase energy, clearing up my closet, giving to charity and my favourite is updating my interior space accessories.

According to Maree Louise, Project Manager at Little Home Renos in Sydney, Australia, minor improvements to your home can improve comforts; Raci- an interior designer from GDC interiors journal suggests that decorating your interior can make you happier and consequently healthier and more productive. So there you have it- a beautiful and cozy interior can positively improve your emotions.

I came across these interior design deco ideas for autumn winter. What can be more cozy than plush velvet textures, fluffy cushions, and warm throws. With all the trees, outside, naked from their loss of beautiful lush leaves, the indoor plants can be really inviting and cheerful reminding us of spring and summer hence enhancing our moods.

Reeled into the Trending Traid

Traid shop Hsmith copy 2

Image: Traid

As you will notice from reading my blogs I have a soft spot for vintage, upcycling, repurposing, reworks and the lot. Today was one of those days I decided to go vintage hunting. On route I was distracted by Traid; they are a charity shop passionate about reducing waste, carbon emissions and consumption.

Their highlight is, their aim to enhance working environments and systems in the textile industry. In addition, they educate the public on the knock-on effects of these industries on the environment. We all should play our part by making sustainable decisions.

But of course, I did not notice the huge sale signs on the windows. You know how it feels like when you get into a shop with sales and you can barely get to the clothes dues to the stampede of fellow customers? Thank God It was mid-week; imagine a relaxed shopping browse ooh yes.  Whilst riffling through, just from the corner of my eye I spotted this luxurious purple velvet sticking out from the rail on my left.

Walked over to it, my heart racing, I pulled it out and noticed it was a pair of large gorgeous velvet curtain fabric; checked the price and couldn’t believe the bargain. Then I noticed more pieces on the rail; as we all do, I piled on a mound on my skinny arm hobbling to the counter, the chatty assistant looking amused and supportive folded the items neatly, tallied my receipt and I was out of there before I could change my mind.

Note that these fabrics go for 3 to 4 times the price per meter in the shops. I was super excited to get more than a meter for ¼ the price per meter. On route, in the train, on my way home mind was racing with ideas. As I was staring into empty space smiling I realised this guy staring at me assuming I was smiling and smitten by him or something. In my head I was thinking “no love, I have with me some lovely fabric that I cannot wait to sew”.

Time to get creative; looking forward to sharing with you some ‘Produit Fini’, and you can let me know what you think.

Also, just want to let you know that Traid as a charity- believe in Zero waste and their projects ensure just that. They have over 1500 charity clothes banks which they turn into beautiful sale items. They are in 191 boroughs and districts in the UK.

The Beautiful Historical Tulira Castle

I was browsing round for some juicy Saturday news when i came across this article on A Historic Irish castle which is on sale for £5.5 million for the first time in 20 years. I just could not help myself, i love history, the architecture and Art Deco of the by gone eras. The article definitely didn’t disappoint.

The castle happens to be the only one in Ireland, never to be invaded.  The lucky new owners saved Castle and restored it to its former glory after buying it at its worst state ever. The castle is one of the most significant ever to be built and has rich architectural and cultural heritage.

What i love about the Castle are its Stunning Gothic architecture, Beautiful historical 15th to 19th century antique furniture giving it an exquisite interior Deco. Every room has its own different colour theme, the stone walls which are left bare together with the curved wood and beautiful rugs really complement each other beautifully. And the castle’s location and grounds, ooh who wouldn’t want to wake up to that everymorning. If you love attending church, the castle actually has its own mini church inside.

George Ashlin- a celebrated architecture and designer of a few of the the well knows neo-gothic churches in Ireland, -designed a castellated house and added it to the tower house in 1882. This Tower house was the original structure built in 15th or 16th century.

The Castellated house was commissioned by Edward Martyn  who was the owner at the time, he was also the first president of Sinn Fein. It is known that after joining the Irish nationalist cause he called for all Irishmen who joined the British army to be flogged, he also refused the song “God Save The Queen” to be sung at the castle after a party. Edward Martyn had great wealth which gave him the opportunity to play an important role in the revival of the Irish Literary scene and the arts as well as the establishment of the Irish state.

Lets hope his spirit does not come to haunt the new “Brit Owner” for occupying his lovely Tulira Castle. If i was the new owners i would call in the poltergeist experts after the surveyors just to make sure.

Hadrian’s Wall Wkend- stayed at Willowford B&B

Really enjoyed this trip to the Hadrian’s Wall– organised by a good friend of ours. Although it was still snowing like mad, it was a good idea to just get out of London and kill the winter blues. Sharing my Trips away is a decision i made just recently; my time was pre-occupied with blogging for a fashion Magazine, which was a pleasure, plans to embark on my vintage lifestyle blog was constantly being derailed.

Excitedly, here we are now. Hadrian’ wall was built by the Romans as a defence fortification around AD 122. It was built by emperor Hadrian- hence the name Hadrian’s Wall. Built through the wall were gates  which were also used as custom posts for trade and Taxes.

Quite a fair bit of the wall still remains today, people come from all over the world to see the wall. It is very popular with Hikers and walkers who challenge themselves by walking the 117 km (73 miles) over several days, as well as enjoying the history of the area.

I have been to quite a few Hikes over 3 year, and i list it as one of my favourites- in terms of terrain, landscapes and history. One of the famous land marks we got to see is the tree where a scene from the earliest Robin Hood movie was filmed.  The views were amazing as well even with the snow. I insist that everyone should visit, you will not be disappointed.

Scene from Robin Hood the Movie filmed here.

We took advantage of the bank holiday – (March 29th to 31st, 2013), Accommodation was at the Charming Willow Ford Farm in Cumbria, which was quite handy since it was situated very close to part of the wall. The Hadrian wall winds past the farm and down the Irthing valley towards Birdoswald Roman Fort. Rooms at the Willowford Farm are beautifully decorated and comfortable with underfloor heating for cold weather, and Skyline windows for the lovely sun to wonderfully stroke you in the early hours of the morning.  Served in the morning was a scrumptious organic breakfast- early enough especially since you want to start your walks early. (All the food served at the B&B is organic). You’ll get a very warm welcome from the ever-so-adorable resident Pets, snow ball the black and white cat and two border collie black and white dogs. I really do miss those little rascals as well as the trip.

Willow Ford Farm B&B

The Group will not forget the Kind hearted B&B owner picking us up after 11 miles of the hike, this was a result of us being over ambitious and trying to do 15 miles in 6 hours and as you can already guess – the challenge was not achieved and we didn’t want to miss Dinner :D. Also watch out for the lovely pets insisting on accompanying you to your walks. we tried all evasive maneuvers, tricking them and locking the gates behind them but they managed to wriggle their way through. At some point, we got scolded by a sheep owner for bringing “Our” pet dogs near his lambing sheep- hilarious since its not our blooming dog. We all were in fits of laugher.

Snow Ball from Willowford Farm B&B

One of the Border Collie from B&B

The B&B is also located near the willowford foot bridge– it is known that the bridge was airlifted into position in 1999 and has won a number of engineering and design awards and has appeared on the cover of ordnance survey L86 map. Day 3 of the hike we crossed this bridge, as well- we had the privilege of visiting Birdoswald Roman Fort– at birdoswald there’s a souvenir shop that also sells delicious liqueurs in different fruity flavour. Lyme Bay Wineries are the masters behind these delectable Liqueurs. I recommend the ginger flavour. You’ll be ordering them by the crates once you finish your first bottle.

Such an amazing weekend trip it was that one of the group members decided to stay one more day.

If you do decide to check out Hadrian’s Wall I recommend the Willow Ford Farm. Book in advance since it does get full.

My Favourite Ginger Liqueur- last bootle

On my weekender at Hadrian’s wall I managed to visit some souvenir shops, explore them is a must – which sometimes raffles the guys feathers a little- they nicknamed me shopperholic. I am not really, as you all know   there are quite a few vintage shops in the country side. it would be a shame not to visit them and find out what treasures they posses.

First shop I visited was at Birdoswald on our last day. I was hoping to get some souvenirs for my nieces and nephews, never the less they happened to be offering customers samples of their new liqueur and wine beverages. They had a few exciting fruit flavours to choose from- my favourite being the Ginger liqueur. We all bought a few bottles and until this day I cannot stop broadcasting to everyone about this Delish  drinks from Lyme bay Wineries .
Lyme Bay Wineries is situated in Shute, Axminister in beautiful Devon.  They use traditional recipes and still the latest production techniques to produce delectable wines, liqueurs and ciders.

My Ginger flavoured Liqueur especially went down well after a dinner party at my flat with friends. You know what this means- I have to order some more.  Keep some for Gifts and some for Future dinner parties. (It is known that Ginger after food helps with digestion and Liqueur is also known to do the same).
If you have never heard of Lyme bay Wineries- I would advice you go on their website and order at least two of your favourite flavours and try it out. I guarantee you will not be disappointed and please mention that you heard about this amazing beverages from JiJJy’s Maison first and I will be looking for my dinner invitation 🙂
